What a great week for the men's basketball program!
Awesome display against Florida, sandwiched between tough road wins. So unlike last year, a team peaking at the right time.
One of the members of my wife's family was at the Gator Stomp, for some fabulous pix of Pat Summitt's performance, Dane Bradshaw's Senior Night, and the game, click here.

Tennessee takes Tide in OT!
Gutsy performance. While outsized, the Vols swarmed and turned Bama over again and again. The legs aren't there for the three point shot. How devastating would it have been to lose that one after having a double digit lead. A couple of excellent photos on the ESPN recap page.

Bad loss for the Vols at USC. Defensive lapses and turnovers galore. The latest ESPN bracketology has UT as an 8. Just when you think they're poised to make a run, they lay an egg against a bottom feeder. Tough games coming, lots of positions to be won or lost; but a win or three on the road would do wonders for seeding.

As promised in a previous post, some research has been done to cull some information regarding potential jersey retirees for the Tennessee Men's Basketball program. I have not yet looked at the SEC honorees, what follows is professional and olympic achievement.
Bernard King, whose jersey was recently retired, spent 14 years in the pros, and was selected to the All-Star game three times, twice as a first teamer.
The only Olympians were Ernie Grunfeld and Allan Houston, who both won gold, in 1976 and 2000, respectively.
Dale Ellis played in the NBA for 17 years, and was selected to one all-star game.
Ernie Grunfeld played 9 years in the pros, but was never awarded all-star status. He was inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame in 1987, however this is *not* listed as a criterion of jersey retirement.
Allan Houston played 12 years in the NBA, and was selected to the All-Star game twice.

Bruce Pearl appears to be the real deal, as far as implementing a system that can work for your talent level to achieve at exceptional levels.
I had thought that the team would struggle this year to be competitive, but you have to like the fire they have shown, keeping together through a tough patch with the Lofton injury, along with several heartbreaking single possession losses... Great poise, and excellent execution and free throw shooting in crunch time against Kentucky tonight.
I think the bracketologists now have to move the Vols into their "Lock" categories -- a good run in the conference tourney -- semis -- could bump them up to as high as a six seed. Lofty thoughts for a team that has spent a good hunk of the season out of the top twenty five, but the "good wins" and close losses to teams with superior talent make it a realistic possibility. I must admit though, we may be hurt come Selection Sunday by the stratospheric rating last year...

According to Chris Low of the Tennessean, (www.tennessean.com) Tennessee has announced the criteria for consideration to have your jersey retired by the Men's Basketball program.
Five years must have passed since the candidate played at Tennessee, and that candidate must have two of the following four honors — first-team All-American, SEC Player of the Year, member of an Olympic basketball team or member of the NBA or ABA All-Star team.
Update soon with the list of players that currently qualify, or would qualify after the time wait period.
